Signing is a great way to communicate with your baby well before they can speak. You'll be amazed at how much they have to say with their hands! Once they can they'll be able to ask for milk, nappy changes and 'talk' about the sounds they hear or animals they see, and the best bit.... you'll be able to understand! Improving communication like this really helps reduce frustration for you both and also gives so much enjoyment.

At our classes you'll learn baby signing through music and song; some familiar and some original, using instruments, props and pictures. You don't need any experience or prior knowledge of sign language to join the course and you don't need to be able to sing! Classes are small and relaxed, friendly and supportive.

    About Me

When my eldest daughter was 6 months old, we joined a Sign and Sign class inspired by a taster we had attended, and I was immediately inspired by our superb energetic teacher, who made it all look so effortless. I found the signs so easy to learn and replicate, and I was amazed when my daughter started signing 'more' at 8 months old, swiftly followed by 'dog', 'where', and other fun signs I had fun deciphering - she would tell me on our walks that she had spotted the 'bus' before I did!

What's more, she started sharing her signs with her grandparents, and not only was I able to understand her, she was able to communicate with all of us around her, reducing many frustrations and preventing so many potential tantrums by being able to ask for a 'drink' or 'more' relatively quickly!

Fast forward 2 more children and I'm still amazed my 1 year old can sign 'sorry' to his older sisters, and even my eldest is now coming home with more signs learnt at school!

I've seen and heard so many wonderful stories with little ones signing, that I truly believe this is giving us a very special glimpse into the world of a baby and toddler!

If you are slightly apprehensive or sceptical please don't worry, I couldn't envisage how signing could be for us, let alone change the way I communicated with my tiny person - but, from the other side, I say give it a try, and surprise yourself! What started for us as a brilliant class full of singing, music and instrument playing, quickly became a realisation of how much our little ones could take on board and how well they could communicate.

It's made me even more keen to share just how amazing baby signing can be and the benefits of it. I was then able to start signing with our younger two from when they were newborn and was excited to see the difference in starting earlier. The older sisters loved showing the signs too so it's a whole family experience. I was blown away yet each time by how much the youngest could tell us and fell in love with signing even more!

Please get in touch to ask any questions, you can contact me here or via the enquiry page, I'd love to hear from you!

I look forward to signing together soon!

WHICH STAGE? THREE STAGES FOR THREE AGES

    How old is your baby?

SING AND SIGN BABES (0- 5/ 6 months)

A lovely gentle music and sensory class with a strong emphasis on communication. The course introduces the basics of the Sing and Sign approach for those keen to sign with their babies. We also show you lovely adaptations of familiar songs to enjoy with your baby while face to face, during nappy change, bathtime, bedtime and gentle play.

STAGE 1 (for babies from 6- 14 months)

Your baby will be ready for Stage 1 from around 6 months or older at the start of term. This is because they will be sitting up, becoming more aware and ready to enjoy the music, the toys and props and social aspects of this class.

If you have already completed one course of Stage 1 then we recommend coming back for a second term! In terms of the learning process, the first term is for you, the second term is for your babyDid you know there are well over 100 signs covered in our Stage 1 course? If your baby is younger than 13/ 14 months then we definitely recommend repeating this Stage 1 curriculum. Coming to class for a second term enables you to see the usefulness of some of our course ideas in action at home, as your baby will be growing developmentally ready to respond more and more! I can speak for all our teachers when I say they love to see their existing babies stay on and that they hope to see you there!

TODDLING ON TO STAGE 2 (for babies from 14- 30 months)

If your baby is a little older, you may feel ready for a class with a little more action and activity! Even if you have never done Sing and Sign before, in our Stage 2 class we still include the basic advice on how to sign with your baby and have some lovely songs to enjoy, covering concepts such as the weather, colours, being helpful, simple counting, opposites and even beginning phonetic awareness all enjoyed through our magic ingredient – music! There are also opportunities to move about more, and plenty of toys and props to keep your baby amused.

    Parent testimonials

We have loved our first term of classes with Melissa. She is so great with the babies and has amazing energy! It’s lovely having lots of new songs and rhymes to sing and sign at home with my baby too. Really looking forward to our stage 1 classes next term!”

We’ve absolutely loved our Babes sing and sign class with Melissa! She is so fun and interactive and the babies all adore her…and Jessie cat! It’s great having a focus and theme each week which I can incorporate into play time and every day activities with my baby at home and out and about. The signing is so engaging and I love building those blocks for language and communication for my baby :)”

"Me and my daughter adore this class. We started a little later (her first class of stage 1 was when she was nearly 13 months) but she picked it up straight away! The songs are catchy and it makes it super easy to practice at home and within 3 weeks she was already regularly signing, 'please', 'thank you', 'duck', 'all gone', 'food' and 'more'. Not even at the end of stage 1 and the communication we have gained as a result of this is amazing! Can't wait to start stage 2 in Jan!"

"My daughter and I love Sing & Sign! We’ve just finished our first term. My 8 month old has loved the classes, bouncing along to all the songs and it’s fun to practice at home too. She definitely recognises a lot of the signs now and has just started clapping and waving so I’m on the lookout for her first sign. It’s a lovely friendly class, Anna makes sure all the children get individual attention and is genuinely interested in their personalities and development. Can’t wait for the January term!"

"I would highly recommend Sing and Sign. My little girl has been signing when tired when she wants to go to sleep, also signs to eat and wants her milk. Her favourite sign has to be slide, when we sign park to her she says yes, and then signs slide. Very very happy mummy and so proud of her."

  • Nurseries

    Does your child attend nursery?

Sing and Sign has an excellent Nursery Affiliation Programme or 'NAP', where franchisees offer training to local nurseries. We will train staff on their own premises (or online due to restrictions) at a time to suit them.  We teach staff a selection of signs, tailor-made to the nursery's individual requirements and design an Individual Action Plan to inspire staff and make signing fun and easy to incorporate in their day-to-day activities.

Following training, the nursery will receive a Certificate of Sing and Sign Affiliation together with ongoing access to our signing resources and the licensing to use our copyrighted products.

If your baby or toddler attends a nursery or if you know of a childcare facility that would be interested in receiving further information, please do pass our details on, or contact me annarichardson@singandsign.co.uk

Additionally we may be able to offer mini sessions at the nurseries. If you'd like to have sessions at your nursery please do mention us to your provider, it can be of great reassurance if your little one already signs at home to know they'll be understood in their childcare setting.

Anna delivered our Nursery Affiliation Programme training to the Perfect Start Day Nurseries in both Sevenoaks and Cobham. They are now affiliated with Sing and Sign for the year and using signing in their settings.
